Senior management from MCA Kosovo, including CEO Florina Duli Sefaj, Deputy CEO for Programs Burim Hashani, BESS Project Director Bajram Neshati with associates, and MCC Senior Operations Advisor for Energy Jonathan Saiger, met with the Design and Supervision Consultant for the Frequency Restoration Response (FRR) and Multi-Functional Energy Storage (MFES) activities.
The discussions focused on the progress of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) dedicated for the Kosovan Transmission System and Market Operator (KOSTT) under the FRR activity, as well as the BESS for newly established Energy Storage Corporation of Kosovo (ESCorp) under the MFES activity.
The parties discussed the continuation of the project design for the FRR activity following the site change from Palaj village, near the 110/35/10 kV Palaj substation, to the Municipality of Ferizaj, close to the 400/110 kV Ferizaj 2 substation. This project comprises the installation of a 45 MW (90 MWh) BESS to provide secondary energy reserves (aFRR) for KOSTT.
Project Director Bajram Neshati highlighted the critical role of the Consultant in overall project implementation and emphasized the need to expedite commencing the design for the MFES activity BESS, which will consist of a 125 MW (250 MWh) system. This facility will provide tertiary energy reservers (mFRR), energy arbitrage, voltage regulation, and other BESS services, and is planned to be located in Istog Municipality, adjacent to the Peja 3 400/110 kV substation. After a productive discussion, the parties agreed to start site surveys immediately, with full project commencement within the month of October.
MCA Kosovo, alongside representatives from Ferizaj Municipality, the Consultant, and the KOSTT Project Implementation Unit (PIU), then conducted a site visit for the FRR activity and the KOSTT 400/110 kV substation in Ferizaj. The next day, the team visited the ESCorp BESS project site and the KOSTT Peja 3 substation to coordinate subsequent steps for the MFES project design preparation.
